1Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.

 2And the sons of Meshelemiah were, Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

 3Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.

 4Moreover the sons of Obededom were, Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth.

 5Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth: for God blessed him.

 6Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.

 7The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.

 8All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obededom.

 9And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.

 10Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)

 11Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.

 12Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.

 13And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.

 14And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

 15To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.

 16To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.

 17Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two and two.

 18At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.

 19These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.

 20And of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.

 21As concerning the sons of Laadan; the sons of the Gershonite Laadan, chief fathers, even of Laadan the Gershonite, were Jehieli.

 22The sons of Jehieli; Zetham, and Joel his brother, which were over the treasures of the house of the LORD.

 23Of the Amramites, and the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites:

 24And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler of the treasures.

 25And his brethren by Eliezer; Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.

 26Which Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.

 27Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.

 28And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.

 29Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.

 30And of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valour, a thousand and seven hundred, were officers among them of Israel on this side Jordan westward in all the business of the LORD, and in the service of the king.

 31Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.

 32And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.

1 Chronicles 26 Commentary

(26:1-19) Every Ministry Matters - This chapter focuses on gatekeepers, a ministry that might seem less visible than that of priests or musicians. Yet God carefully records their names and responsibilities. The gatekeepers protected the temple, welcomed worshipers, and maintained order. In God's kingdom, there are no unimportant ministries. Every act of faithful service contributes to His work and is valuable in His sight.

(26:4-8) God's Blessing Produces Faithful Generations - Obededom's family is repeatedly described as blessed, strong, and capable because "God blessed him." His faithfulness in caring for the ark of God (1 Chronicles 13:14) was followed by blessings upon his household. While God's blessings are acts of grace, faithful obedience often leaves a spiritual legacy that influences future generations.

(26:13) God Shows No Favoritism - Lots were cast "as well the small as the great," ensuring that every family received its assignment fairly. God's work is not based upon popularity, influence, or social standing. The Lord values humble faithfulness above worldly recognition, and He assigns responsibilities according to His wisdom.

(26:20-28) Stewardship Requires Integrity - Certain Levites were entrusted with overseeing the treasures dedicated to the Lord. These offerings had been given through victories, gifts, and acts of worship and were to be carefully protected and properly managed. Those entrusted with God's resources must demonstrate honesty, accountability, and faithful stewardship, remembering that everything ultimately belongs to Him.

(26:27) Victories Should Honor God - David dedicated the spoils of battle "to maintain the house of the LORD." Rather than using his victories solely for personal gain, he invested God's blessings into God's work. Likewise, believers should view every blessing, promotion, and success as an opportunity to advance God's kingdom rather than merely increasing personal comfort.

(26:29-32) Serving God in Daily Responsibilities - Some Levites were assigned to administrative duties, judging disputes, and overseeing civil matters throughout Israel. Their work reminds us that serving God extends beyond public worship. Whether leading, managing, teaching, working, or serving in everyday responsibilities, believers honor God by carrying out every task faithfully and with integrity.

(26:30-32) Spiritual Leadership Requires Character - David selected "men of valour" to oversee important responsibilities throughout the nation. Godly leadership requires more than ability—it requires dependable character, courage, and faithfulness. God continues to seek leaders whose lives reflect integrity and whose hearts are devoted to His purposes.

(26:1-32) Organization Protects God's Work - David carefully assigned responsibilities to gatekeepers, treasurers, officers, and judges so that every aspect of temple worship and national leadership functioned properly. Good organization is not contrary to spirituality; it allows God's work to be carried out efficiently, responsibly, and consistently for His glory.

(26:20-28) What Is Dedicated to God Is Sacred - The treasures under the Levites' care had been dedicated unto the Lord. Once something was devoted to God, it was to be treated with reverence and respect. Today, our time, talents, finances, and lives have likewise been dedicated to Christ. Faithful stewardship means using every resource for His honor rather than our own desires.

(26:1-32) Faithfulness Behind the Scenes Is Remembered by God - Most of the people listed in this chapter served quietly without public recognition, yet God preserved their names in His Word for all generations. The Lord sees every unseen act of obedience, every faithful responsibility, and every humble servant. Though the world may overlook behind-the-scenes ministry, God never does. He faithfully rewards those who serve Him with sincere hearts.

LIFE APPLICATION by Dave Burnette

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we Continue in the book of 1 Chronicles with Chapter 26 and we see the duties of the temple guards, officials, and others who served in the house of God. What catches my eye is the is verse 12 where it is reported that the porters "ministered" in the house of God. This word minister simply means "to serve". In making application we see that we need to be a part of the Church through salvation. Then we are to be a part of the body in, not only attendance, but also service. Simply put, we are to have a ministry in the House of God that the Spirit of God will direct us into. It might be greeting, encouraging, teaching, ushering, preaching, praying, etc. No matter how big or small your ministry the Lord works all the body together to do His Will. It reminds me of when I started going to Church regularly at the age of 20, I asked the Lord what he would have me to do and he placed me at the coffee pot greeting the folks that came to Church. As I greeted faithfully the Lord increased my responsibilities to the position I perform today. How about you? Do you have a Ministry in the House of God?
