1 Chronicles 24 📓 Preparing for Worship

1Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

 2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office.

 3And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

 4And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.

 5Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

 6And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

 7Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

 8The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

 9The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

 10The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,

 11The ninth to Jeshuah, the tenth to Shecaniah,

 12The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

 13The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

 14The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

 15The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses,

 16The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel,

 17The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,

 18The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.

 19These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.

 20And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.

 21Concerning Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah.

 22Of the Izharites; Shelomoth: of the sons of Shelomoth; Jahath.

 23And the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.

 24Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah: of the sons of Michah; Shamir.

 25The brother of Michah was Isshiah: of the sons of Isshiah; Zechariah.

 26The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi: the sons of Jaaziah; Beno.

 27The sons of Merari by Jaaziah; Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri.

 28Of Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons.

 29Concerning Kish: the son of Kish was Jerahmeel.

 30The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.

 31These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.

1 Chronicles 24 Commentary

(24:1-2) Holiness Matters in God's Service - The chapter begins by reminding us that Nadab and Abihu died because of their disobedience before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1-2). Their lives stand as a lasting reminder that serving God is a sacred privilege that must never be approached carelessly. God is holy, and those who minister in His name are called to reverence, obedience, and purity.

(24:3-5) God Is a God of Order - David organized the priests into twenty-four divisions so that temple ministry would be carried out faithfully and without confusion. God values order because it promotes faithful service and allows His work to continue effectively. The New Testament likewise teaches that all things in the church should be done "decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40).

(24:5-6) Impartiality in God's Work - The priestly divisions were assigned by casting lots rather than by personal preference or favoritism. This demonstrated that each family had equal value before the Lord and that the assignments ultimately rested in God's sovereign direction. God's calling is determined by His wisdom, not by human status or influence.

(24:7-19) Every Assignment Is Important - Although some priestly divisions may have seemed more prominent than others, each group shared the responsibility of ministering before the Lord. In God's kingdom there are no insignificant places of service. Whether visible or unnoticed, every faithful act of ministry contributes to God's work.

(24:10) The Division of Abijah - The eighth priestly division was assigned to Abijah. Centuries later, Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, faithfully served in this same division when the angel Gabriel appeared to announce John's birth (Luke 1:5-13). This demonstrates God's faithfulness across generations and shows how seemingly ordinary acts of service can become part of His extraordinary plan.

(24:19) Faithful Service According to God's Command - The priests served "according to their manner, under Aaron... as the LORD God of Israel had commanded." Their ministry was governed by God's instructions rather than human tradition or personal opinion. The effectiveness of Christian ministry today likewise depends upon faithfulness to God's Word rather than cultural trends or personal preferences.

(24:20-31) Every Family Had a Role - In addition to the priests, the remaining Levite families also received responsibilities within the house of God. The work of the Lord required many different people serving together. God's kingdom advances when every believer uses his or her spiritual gifts faithfully for the benefit of the whole body of Christ.

(24:31) Great and Small Stand Equal Before God - Lots were cast without regard to age, prominence, or position, for "the principal fathers over against their younger brethren." God's service is not determined by worldly importance. He values humility, faithfulness, and obedience far more than rank or reputation.

(24:1-31) Faithfulness Across Generations - This chapter records names and family divisions that may appear ordinary, yet each represented generations of faithful servants preserving God's worship. Much of God's work is accomplished by ordinary people who quietly serve Him year after year. Heaven remembers the names of those who faithfully fulfill the responsibilities God has entrusted to them.

(24:3-31) Organization Supports Worship - David's careful organization ensured that worship would continue long after his lifetime. Planning, delegation, and preparation are not merely administrative tasks—they are acts of stewardship that strengthen God's work for future generations. Wise leaders build systems that allow faithful ministry to continue beyond themselves.

LIFE APPLICATION by Dave Burnette

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we Continue in the book of 1 Chronicles with Chapter 24 and we see David dividing the priests into groups. What catches my eye today is the structure of the Temple services. This did not hinder the Spirit of God, rather it provided an orderly context for worship. In making application we see the preparation for worship actually causes us to prepare our hearts for worship. Once we focus on Him and put ourselves aside the Spirit of God has liberty to move in us and in the service. We find the order brings the Glory to God as we experience the joy and freedom of liberty. This does not mean that we cannot express our joy through praise in worship as long as our praise gives God Glory and not just attention to ourselves. How about you? Do you prepare for worship?
