Lesson 2 — Be Praying (Talking with God)

Texts: Luke 11:1–13; Matthew 6:5–13; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Principle: Prayer is the breath of the new life; without it, the soul starves and the battle is lost.

Precept: Build a life-rhythm of Scripture-shaped, Spirit-helped, persistent prayer.

Cohesive Overview:

When the disciples watched Jesus, they did not first ask for preaching tips; they asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Prayer is not informing God; it is involving God. It is the child’s access to “Abba, Father,” the soldier’s supply line, the branch’s sap. We pray because we have an enemy (Eph. 6), because we have needs (Phil. 4), and because our Father delights to give good gifts (Luke 11). The pattern Jesus gave (often summarized by ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) is not a script to recite mechanically but a framework for a God-centered conversation.

A sustainable prayer life needs keys of submission that move it from theory to practice: set a Priority (first), make a Plan (when/where), remember the Purpose (God’s will, God’s glory), exercise Persistence (keep asking/knocking), choose a Place (habit builds hunger), and follow a Process (use the Lord’s Prayer or the Psalms to shape your words). Prayer is the atmosphere in which the armor is put on, the gospel is shared, and guidance is received. It is how we abide, not a line item but a life.

The enemy wages war to keep you from the closet—through distraction, condemnation, or delay. Remember: you do not pray to earn God’s favor; you pray because favor was earned for you by Christ. Boldness springs from the blood (Heb. 10:19–22). Weakness is not a barrier; it is the invitation. The Spirit helps our infirmities and intercedes according to the will of God (Rom. 8:26–27).

Keys of Submission:

Priority • Plan • Purpose • Persistence • Place • Process.

Practice This Week:

Set a daily 15-minute appointment with God (Bible open, pen in hand).

Pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, expanding each clause with your own words.

Keep a simple two-column journal: Prayers / Answers.

Declaration: “I will pray without ceasing; I seek the Father, in the name of Jesus, helped by the Spirit.”
